Hi! I'm just a typical college kid getting into music theory, song writing and digital production after a 3-year fling with the ukulele and minimal piano experimentation. I'm learning theory through online and literary sources in my free time, and have been writing some verses, but want to get some sound behind them. Initially, I bought a cheap Casio Mini Piano, but the quality and ability of it doesn't seem to be enough for what I'm going for.

As a full-time college student with a low hour, slightly-above-minimum-wage job, my budget is relatively low. I figure going for smaller MIDI's would be my best course of action, as the minis are always lest costly than the normal counterparts.

My research over the past couple of weeks has led me to the Novation Launchkey Mini and Akai MPK Mini, from what I can tell they are higher-end MIDIs packed into a portable, cheaper solution which is perfect for me and my double-sized dorm.

That last option is me not being sure that this tools are going to help me in the direction I feel I want to go artistically. I'm going for mild techno, semi-ballad type songs (I'm sure my terminology is on point, but bear with me), in a similar vein to 21 Pilots, verging on Bastille or Jon Bellion. I don't know what kinds of sounds I can produce in packages provided with the two products, but if there's a better option that is just a ~$100 MIDI software not packaged with a controller, I figure I'd be better off 'drawing' chords and other effects in that than making sounds I don't need with one of these keyboards.

Sorry for being long-winded, but if anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be very appreciated! I'm incredibly excited to try expressing myself in a new way but don't know how to get there just yet.
